I am about to make my first trip to New Orleans and will be able to give you better information first hand.
Here is the information I've gathered for myself by searching other online reports from the other rescuers. If you have anything new to add here, please email me and I will post.

Come only if you are serious about helping the animals, you are willing to work your butt off to do it, and if you are willing to participate in ALL phases, including kennel cleaning, animal care, walking, etc.
You may be sleeping in your car on on the ground, consider bringing a cot, an air mattress or a tent. Bring a cooler if you can (perhaps pick up a disposable one if you are flying), and a few bags of ice (or more), some gallons of water, and any food you might want to eat or share BEFORE you get into New Orleans (before you hit the Causeway).
Be prepared to see a lot of dogs running around the I-10, I-12, I-55 or any of the other major highways down in the affected areas and many, many, many dead dogs along the way as well. If people could bring small cans of dog/cat food & maybe put it in the carriers they can be enticed into being rescued! Water is very important too! Small bottles of water w/squirters.
